Sandinista! is the fourth studio album by The Clash, and was released on December 12, 1980. It was released as a triple album containing 36 tracks, 6 songs on each side. Sandinista!anticipated the world music trend of the 1980s, featuring a wide variety of musical styles including funk, reggaie, jazz, gospel, rockabilly, folk, dub, rhythm and blues, clypso, and rap.

The album was recorded during most of 1980 in London, Manchester, Jamaica, and New York. It was produced by The Clash and recorded and mixed by Bill Price. It was well-received by critics, with some even comparing it to the Beatles’ White Album. It won several “best of the year” critics polls in 1981, and was voted the best albumn of the year in The Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop critics poll.

The greatest songs from one of the greatest vocal duos. The Carpenters crafted beautiful, light and airy tunes with meticulous arrangements. All of the memorable ones are included here.

In 1990, Richard Carpenter revised and expanded the Carpenters’ 1973 compilation LP Singles 1969-1973 for the CD era, retaining that album’s 12 tracks and adding nine more in his survey of his and his sister Karen’s run on the pop chart. Now, the set included all of the duo’s 12 Top Ten hits (and their holiday chart-topper, “Merry Christmas Darling”), but it did not contain all their Top 20 hits, eschewing “Solitaire” and “There’s a Kind of Hush (All Over the World),” along with Top 40 hits “I Need to Be in Love” and “All You Get From Love Is a Love Song” in favor of minor chart entries “Ticket to Ride” (their chart debut), “Bless the Beasts and Children” (the B-side of “Superstar”), and “I Believe You,” as well as the non-charting B-side “This Masquerade.” Richard Carpenter also took the opportunity to re-sequence the collection, giving a sense of the retrospective tone by starting with “Yesterday Once More,” followed by the introductory “We’ve Only Just Begun.” Both songs are in the Carpenters’ familiar ballad style, with Richard Carpenter’s piano prominent in the mix along with Karen Carpenter’s (or Hal Blaine’s) drums in the center of the mix, and strings and background vocals (by Karen and Richard) in the back. Gradually, the tempos of the songs increase and other instruments appear, such as the electric guitar solo by Tony Peluso on the fifth track, “Goodbye to Love,” the flute by Bob Messenger on the eighth track, “This Masquerade,” and the pedal steel guitar by Buddy Emmons on the country-inflected “Top of the World.” The sequencing relieves the sameness of Richard Carpenter’s arrangements at least somewhat. Of course, the group’s real draw remains Karen Carpenter’s melancholy alto, which makes even the happier lyrics seem heartbreaking. The 2005 reissue on an SACD hybrid disc adds clarity and, in its three versions (CD audio, SACD stereo, and SACD Surround Sound), increases space between the instruments so that each part can be focused on separately. This is not always an advantage, since it sometimes tends to make music that sounded lush and full in its old, compressed analog form seem surprisingly spare and austere. But Karen Carpenter’s vocals benefit from the central attention they receive. –Review by William Ruhlmann

The Clash is the debut studio album by the English punk rock band of the same name. Released in 1977, it was mostly written on the 18th floor of a high-rise council flat rented by Mick Jones’ grandmother. The recording of the album took place over three weekend sessions at CBS Studio 3 in February 1977. The album is pure, unadulterated rage and fury, fueled by passion stemming from political and social disenfranchisement that many faced in the UK in the late 1970s, and the music is driven by relentless energy; the songs stripped down to bare-bones, three-chord rockers.

The album was well-received by critics and peaked at number 12 on the UK charts, while American critic Robert Christgau gae the album an A rating and stated, “Cut for cut, this may be the greatest rock and roll album…ever manufactured.”

Punk as alienated rage, as anticorporate blather, as joyous racial confusion, as evangelic outreach and white knuckles and haywire impulses.

There’s a certain inherent sadness listening to this concise 12-song collection of the Carpenters’ early hits, especially as it opens with “We’ve Only Just Begun,” with its hopeful, dreamy lyrics — for it was never supposed to be definitive, just the first of at least two such collections. But changes in the public’s taste and a slackening (though never a disappearance) of hits for the duo, and Karen Carpenter’s death in 1983, made this the first and only real mass choice for a Carpenters collection. Ten of the duo’s dozen Top Ten hits are present, from “Close to You” to “Top of the World,” with their gorgeous and original slow ballad interpretation of “Ticket to Ride” and their cover of Carole King’s “It’s Going to Take Some Time” thrown in to offer a slightly wider perspective. Listening to this material, it’s easy to accuse the Carpenters of being hopelessly retro even in their own time — bear in mind that “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Superstar” being contemporaneous with the Allman Brothers’ At Fillmore East and Eat a Peach and you get the idea. But the lush melodies brought out in Richard Carpenter’s arrangements and Karen’s singing are justification in themselves.

The self-titled sixth album by The Helio Sequence began with a friendly competition. Several of the duo’s friends within the Portland, Oregon music scene had been playing “The 20-Song Game.” The rules were simple, playful and ambitious: Songwriters would arrive in their studios at prearranged times and spend all day recording 20 complete songs. When they were finished, they’d have a party, listen to the results and talk about the process of simply making music in the moment. Brandon Summers and Benjamin Weikel took the spirit of the game to heart, and forged ahead writing a new record.

“Negotiations was a very long, introspective process,” remembers Summers of the band’s 2012 Sub Pop LP. “We shut ourselves off from the world and disappeared down the rabbit hole. That’s how we tend to work, but we wanted to try something new, open and immediate.”

In May of 2014 they began arriving each morning in their Portland studio with the mission of making as much music as possible in one month. They just played, recorded ideas, added layers, and eventually cut the loose takes into rough shapes, steadily building songs from their cavalier sketches.

When June arrived, the duo sent their 26 finished songs to 31 friends, fans and family members. They asked each person to rank their 10 favorite tracks. By summer’s end, they had the 10 tracks that shape the breathless and magnetic The Helio Sequence—a record so named because it’s a kind of clean restart for the longtime pair, a revamp of their process and a revitalization of their results.

The Helio Sequence is a renewed push forward for the band, depending on an effortless kinetic energy. It points to the pop that’s bound Summers and Weikel for so long. Indeed, there’s a delightful candor to The Helio Sequence, an openness that is a rare and special feat for a band about to enter its third decade. “It’s less about curating yourself or trying to put yourself across how you want to be perceived,” says Summers.

“It’s about having a conversation with people and giving them something that’s who you are.”

This recording aims to cast a spotlight on some of the remarkable, yet forgotten music written for the solo violin between c.1840 and 1919. The long shadow of JS Bach and his own Partitas and Sonatas for Solo Violin looms over some of the works contained on this disc, yet many of the movements liberate themselves from this influence, displaying a resourcefulness and an array of moods that draw the listener into what can otherwise be the precariously narrow sound world of the solo violin. Many of the pieces have never been recorded before and some, particularly the Second Godard Sonata and Saint-Lubin Fantaisie, deserve to take their place beside Bach, Bartók and Ysaÿe as interesting additions to the central works in the solo violin repertoire.

Pianist Tigran Hamasyan’s Luys I Luso (“Light from the Light”) is an extraordinary exploration of Armenian sacred music, hymns and sharakans (Armenia’s liturgical songs) as well as chants, all arranged for voices and piano. This music of the 5th to 19th centuries is given new and dramatic expression through Hamasyan’s improvisational imagination and committed performances from Armenia’s leading choir, the Yerevan State Chamber Choir. Hamasayan has long been deeply interested in Armenian sacred music, increasingly drawn to its “incredibly beautiful melodies”.

For his first recording on the ECM label, Tigran Hamasyan releases an album that is wholly unique, set apart from his previous work. With Luys i Luso (translated as Light of Light), the 27-year-old prodigy engages in an extraordinary exploration of Armenian religious music. Hamasyan selects both hymns and sharakans (Armenian liturgical songs), arranging them for voice and piano. Music written between the fifth and the nineteenth centuries finds new and dramatic expression in the hands of an artist possessing inordinate imaginative and improvisational talent. Hamasyan has been shaking the jazzosphere for several years now, and these interpretations tie in the talents of the Yerevan State Chamber Choir, Armenia’s most prominent choir, in collaboration. Produced by ECM’s Manfred Eicher, Luys i Luso was put to tape in Yerevan in October 2014, and released in 2015 in commemoration of the centenary of the Armenian genocide. This album is, most evidently, an important and singular piece in the burgeoning oeuvre of Tigran Hamasyan; a jazzman renowned for his ability to refashion artists as diverse as Thelonious Monk and Led Zeppelin! New listeners are urged to recognise the capacious memory that constitutes Luys i Luso. It is a fascinating and brilliantly thought out collection from a young pianist expanding his repertoire with great originality.

Swedish superstar Tove Lo has enchanted audiences across the world with her unique brand of confessional electro-pop. Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo followed her hit single “Habits (Stay High)” — a disarmingly vulnerable recounting of all the shocking things she does to numb a painful breakup — with Queen of the Clouds, a debut album that falls somewhere between Icona Pop’s sugar rush hedonism and Sia’s moody confessions. A good friend of Icona Pop’s Caroline Hjelt (and co-writer of the group’s “Ready for the Weekend”), like Sia, Tove originally thought she’d have a better chance at a pop career by penning songs for others than in the spotlight herself. However, her songwriting background ensures that Queen of the Clouds has plenty of hooks, as well as a high-concept approach: she organizes pop’s eternal concerns of lust, love, and heartbreak into a set of songs that breaks the span of an entire relationship into thirds. While the spoken-word snippets that introduce each part of the album aren’t strictly necessary, the format gives Queen of the Clouds more emotional resonance and balance as it spans seize-the-moment highs such as the fizzy, P!nk-esque “Timebomb,” the openness of “The Way That I Am,” and the loss of “Thousand Miles.” Tove also proves her electro-pop has a similar range with songs that range from bouncy (“Not on Drugs”) to sleek (the EDM moves of “Run on Love”). However, it’s Tove’s frankness that makes her truly distinctive. “Habits (Stay High),” with its tales of going to sex clubs and gorging on Twinkies, is still Queen of the Clouds’ standout, although “Moments,” where she admits “On the good days I am charming as f*ck,” is a close second. By owning her mistakes, she turns them into strengths — and delivers a winning first album in the process.
