“Janárceková’s intellectually unpretentious expressionist music never runs the risk of becoming cliche-infected: her will to express herself and her awareness of fragmentariness combine in a subtle sensuality of sound. At every moment the music seems to be ‘appropriate’: far removed from triviality, and away from fashionable contemplative platitudes.” (Dirk Wieschollek) The Slovak Quasars ensemble’s conductor Ivan Buffa also doubles as the piano soloist with the Bamberg Symphony in the piano concerto of Viera Janárceková, who surely must be counted as one of the most distinguished female voices in today’s European composition landscape.

Since it was founded in 2015, this vivacious trio has revelled in big ideas and committed itself to refreshing great works of the piano trio repertory with a new dynamic. Following its debut recording of the complete Beethoven piano trios, no less, Trio Sōra has now delved into all that Brahms has to offer in the oeuvre for its second album, this Nme on the La Dolce Volta label.

The spirit and passion of youth dominates Brahms’s first trio, a work of unprecedented dimensions, composed in 1853 when he was 21 while staying with Robert and Clara Schumann, for whom he felt great love and gratitude. Less emotional and more compact, his Op 87 is a complex work of interlocking elements and musical conversations written when he was approaching 50. Several symphonies and major concerti later, Brahms was on the verge of old age when he created his last piano trio in 1886; much shorter than the others, it nevertheless seems a gigantic work, one of grandeur and eloquence with many echoes of the gypsy and folkloric music that were an indelible part of his personal history. The trio in which Brahms assigned the melody to the horn (later transcribed for cello), was written soon after his mother died and is ultimately elegaic and imbued with a sense of resignation.

As well as supporting the making of this album, BBT also funded the commissioning of a triple concerto for the Trio from Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy, premiered on 18 February 2022 with co-commissioner Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by Mikko Franck. Another landmark in Trio Sōra’s ‘big ideas’ portfolio.

One of our most important rock bands of the early 1990s and 2000s, YUP, returns as an instrumental band. The prolific rock band made a significant impact on Finland’s musical landscape during their active years with their distinctive and versatile sound and the lyrics and vocals of lead singer Jarkko Martikainen. The band took influences from punk, jazz, folk music and progressive rock, among others. YUP Instrumental will release their new single Rähinää, feileniä digitally today on Kaskelotti Records. The song is available on streaming services from today.

YUP went on an indefinite hiatus in 2009, by which time its members had gradually moved on to their own musically diverse projects. YUP Instrumental now continues YUP’s artistically ambitious expression by focusing on instrumental music. Bass guitarist Valtteri Tynkkynen has been responsible for the compositions, and he is joined by guitarist Jussi Hyyrynen, drummer Janne Mannonen and keyboardist Petri Tiainen.

The project was inspired by Jussi Hyyrysen’s request to Valtteri Tynkkyse to compose new music. Valtteri has spent the last few years concentrating on youth work with Detectives, while Jussi works full-time as an emergency room doctor, but also plays in his own prog band Wöyh!, for which he also composes songs. However, making art together was again, in Valtteri’s words, “strangely inspiring”, especially as Jussi’s commission was to make music that was unstoppably original.

Valtteri explains how the songs came about. “Instrumental music has always been very important to me. Mike Oldfield, Pekka Pohjola and Anssi Tikanmäki have always had a strong influence on my own work and these influences have certainly been heard in all the music I have composed for YUP. Of course, vocal music has always been important to me, but instrumental narration stimulates my imagination in a completely different way. The listener has different freedom to imagine the music in his or her own mind.”

He explains the themes of the songs as follows. “The songs have their origins in very different moods, as the world has stirred the composer’s soul in many different ways and on many different levels since the early 20th century. Ugly and beautiful.” That’s what the new single, Ruffles and Feathers, is all about.

Aline Piboule offers us a journey to the country of light. For her first solo album, she brings together three fundamental French piano works, Fauré’s Ballade and Theme and Variations and Dutilleux’s Sonata, which has become one of her favourite pieces. The programme is made up of a succession of insistent variations on the theme of light, contrasting aesthetics which very often oscillate between shadows, sound and silences. Aline Piboule’s playing has a fairly typical French charm, fluctuating between robustness and tender sensuality.

With Frames, Antoine Karacostas delivers an album of seven compositions and an arrangement of rebetiko, the band’s signature sound. In this opus, he drew his inspiration from painting and pictorial as well as musical impressionism, from French composers such as Emmanuel Chabrier. This album is also a reflection on the notion of framework, both the one we find ourselves in and the one we wish to go beyond, in our personal quest for freedom.

I Wish You Love is a English album released on 19 Apr 2024. I Wish You Love Album has 11 songs sung by Greg Chako Trio, Al West Jr..

Our humble beginnings in my garage over a year ago has evolved present-day in truly ideal fashion: the student is now also a professional collaborator! With my help as Executive Producer, Al West Jr. is soon releasing his first-ever album, titled “I Wish You Love.” We expect to have CDs within days, and the official world-wide streaming release date is Friday, April 19th, 2024. We will have a CD-release party on Thursday April 18th live at Cafe Vivace in Cincinnati.

Al and I have been performing professionally since the middle of last year, in a duet-format (Guitar/Vocals,) and as a quartet (Al West Jr. & The Greg Chako Trio). Our next quartet show is in less than 2 weeks, at Cafe Vivace on February 22nd

Indeed, this is the best possible result for any student-teacher relationship. I couldn’t be happier for Al’s success, but of course, he has to be given all the credit for putting such serious work and dedication into his dream of becoming a skilled and well-informed jazz vocalist.

Korngold began working on his 1st symphony in Vienna in 1951 and completed it in 1952. The work summarized his whole life, which had been lived between two worlds: opera and film and between Europe and the United States. It was intended as a tribute to his “refuge” America and was dedicated to President Roosevelt. Albrecht has been acclaimed for his commitment to 20th century music.

Premiered in 1954 with poor results due to insufficient rehearsal time, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Symphony in F sharp didn’t become part of the concert repertoire until the 1970s, when it was finally received by audiences as a neglected masterpiece. A late work in the post-Romantic vein that is full of drama and lyricism, the symphony showed Korngold’s resistance to avant-garde twelve-tone composition and the international serial school, which he regarded as disastrous to music. However, his score crosses into modern territory with its sharp dissonances, angular melodies, and hard percussive edge, yet it remains true to the composer’s richly chromatic but recognizably tonal methods. This 2010 performance by Marc Albrecht and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg is especially vivid and bold sounding, thanks to the great hybrid SACD presentation by PentaTone, which omits no details and gives the symphony a depth and sonic splendor that other recordings fall short in reproducing. The symphony is backed with Korngold’s incidental music for Much Ado About Nothing, composed in 1918 for the Shakespeare play and then organized into the symphonic suite heard here. The tone is lighter than the symphony, and the influence of Richard Strauss is quite strong in this youthful piece, even to the point of overt allusions to Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche in the overture. While this is enjoyable filler, the symphony provides the best reason to listen, and anyone who loves Korngold’s music should become familiar with it through this exceptional recording.

SOUTHERN STEEL “Get On Through” out of Miami, Florida in 1974 firmly resides in the upper realms of rare early ’70s southern rock LPs and the brilliant guitar interplay, vibrant vocals and finely crafted songs will seriously grab late ’60s westcoast rock ears as well. It’s really accessible stuff, heartfelt country inflected vocals with appealing vivid guitar textures and rhythms that fly. Echoes of Buffalo Springfield, Flying Burrito Brothers, Byrds, more on the rock than the country side but genuine about both. It’s southern but it’s also eastcoast-westcoast. In fact the opening track titled “San Francisco Man” is loaded with searing guitar licks and propulsive rhythmic action hitting pleasure points similar to the first Moby Grape LP. “Get On Through” contains thoughtful song oriented outdoors rock with little in the way of “south’s gonna rise again” attitude, bluesy grit, bad women, whiskey, or hard livin’ roadhouse action. These guys genuinely sound turned on to life, everyday regular dude seeker post ’60s style and it is contagious. You can really feel it when the sweet southern fried dual guitar leads cascade out at just the right moment.

Southern Steel’s primary songwriter, vocalist, electric 12 string, and bassist was Jim Goodman. The other members all did time in previous local bands with names like Heat Machine, Willy Bogg, The Force, and Dakota. Spike Warner on lead / slide guitar and vocals , Ed Ocean Olszewski on lead guitar, bass and vocals, and Greg Orsini on percussion all play tight together with an assured energetic vibe that only comes from experience. Recorded quickly in two days at Criteria Studios with producer Craig Leon ((produced the Ramones and Blondie’s first records) at the helm, this LP exists because two rich Floridian lawyers Bill Blanton and Bill Barragan saw Don Kirshner’s In Concert rock series on TV, decided to get into the music biz, formed a label named Earth Records, put an ad in the paper and found Southern Steel, ready to rake in massive rock and roll dollars. That didn’t happen but fortunately nearly 50 years later we do have this uplifting slice of life. Hard to imagine a band this pure and sincere could exist nowadays with no taint of irony and no corny posing. Real people. In other words… this is a vintage blast of humanity with mesmerizing guitar magic you can really fly high with. Every track has hooks and staying power, the sort of album that feels fresher each time you spin it but somehow also seemed familiar the first time you heard it.
After this LP was issued the band got serious interest from major labels, they certainly had the terrific songs and sonic mojo needed to go up the charts… but it all fizzled out over the next year. If you are into early ’70s southern rock with country flavor and leftover ’60s westcoast flashes, more turned on than traditional in approach you should give this album a chance get stuck in your mind. I can’t get it out of mine!

SIDE ONE:

SAN FRANCISCO MAN opens it up with ringing power chords and ripping lead guitar, delicious westcoast vocal stylings riding above hypnotically surging bass and drum patterns. Gnarly leads spit steel as the rhythm guitar alternates between open airy chords and jagged tough accents, making this a real mover. When the weaving southern fried dual guitar riffs kick near the end you want the jam to go on forever.

24 HOURS A DAY shifts gears into a tapestry of dreamy dangling melodic guitars floating over forward bass motion topped with vocals reminiscent of Richie Furay and Gram Parsons. Proto country rock equidistant to a Byrdsyfolkrock ambience, simple and poignant, swirling around with an infectious exquisite ease. It’s about being in a band on the road and how it’s not the singer’s fault he can’t be with his girl 24 hours a day. The melody is quite inventive in how it unfolds over the chord changes.

ME AND YOU opens with an ascending dual guitar hook above a free flowing gentle rhythm guitar bed with Wrecking Crew level perfect bass and drums. The singer has quite an affected nasal intensity in his voice, emotionally perfect for the lyrics about appreciating an aimless no agenda day, just grooving around with his girl, savoring a rare fleeting moment when everything seems effortlessly eternal, totally in sync… the sort of day that inspires him to sing “Gee I never knew that I could get so high just passing the time away”.

WHERE’S THE COUNTRY GONE is a jangle fest of shimmering guitars riding a stately groove evoking sad resignation over vanishing green fields that turn into cold stone and six-lane highways. Terrific melodic leads and tasteful rhythm guitar blend as if George Harrison and Neil Young were behind the curtain together pulling the strings. The sincerity in the vocal is heartfelt to a devastating degree, the sense of loss is eerily comforting. If it seems too earnestly vulnerable that’s on you, not the band. This song is simply gorgeous without being fancy. They really mean it, man.

ONE UP FOR LISTENING ends side one in style, morphing hard rock and country seamlessly into an instant classic with slide guitar moves to die for and a smoking snaky killer of a guitar break. Like all of the tracks on this album the arrangements are uncluttered, right on the money with interlocking structural precision yet performed with the vibrant energy of a live band.

SIDE TWO:

THERE’S JUST YOU has a nostalgic early rock and roll undercurrent appropriate to the close harmony Everly Brothers flashback in the vocals. The extended guitar break soars nicely but this is the only track on the LP that messes around much with more ordinary familiar roots influences.

DAYS END has a moody feel but is an optimistic song suggesting that if you and I start a new kind of living maybe somebody else might follow along… we can change the world naive hippie idealism but sung with so much feeling you wanna believe it’s possible. Superb luscious and elegant guitar leads with a fabulous tone over a classic chord pattern with descending bass line create just the right reflective atmosphere.

THE FEELING “play it cool it’s against the rules but you know you gotta try it… just don’t get caught” Ha! The phrasing when they lay down that piece of advice is genius. This is the hardest rocker on the LP with sublimely powerful chord changes and I can even imagine a Grand Funk Railroad version in my mind. I bet they jammed out on this one at live gigs.

DON’T DENY is the extended epic closer, entering with rich acoustic guitar textures, weaving in airy leads and earnest vocals reminiscent of Roger McGuinn. It builds across seven minutes to a high energy climax over the classic chord pattern used by Traffic for “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and by the Beatles for the last four minutes of “Hey Jude”. Once again the lyrics have more of a post-psychedelic outdoors hippie wanderer vibe about life, fate and destiny than the rawer subject matter associated with most southern rock. No matter what you are into you will really dig the guitar moves!

The January Album, the fourth record from Adam and David Moss, those twin sons of Peoria, Illinois, known musically as The Brother Brothers, is a COVID-era record in the strictest sense: The Mosses wrote most of its 12 tracks during the first few months of lockdown in the US. But The January Album, rather than lacing each song with obvious references to the crisis, embraces that moment under the surface. The work reflects themes common to the brothers’ discography to date; it’s tied to 2020 as a consequence of its conception.

The choice to sidestep didactic nonsense is refreshing, if unsurprising. Like all other Brother Brothers records, The January Album is characterized by humble honesty. The Mosses aren’t showy or flashy. They speak and play simply, so their messages can be clearly heard, though this belies their craftsmanship’s subtle complexities, the product of a shared soul that’s equal parts playful and doleful. These two qualities often entwine, but occasionally the brothers separate them, as on The January Album’s opening tracks, “Lonesome” and “Brown Dog”: The former captures pure existential melancholy, while the latter cheerfully counts the praises of man’s best friend and takes the mickey out of man.

On “Lonesome,” a gentle number spotlighting the human race’s cosmic insignificance, the resonating twang of David’s guitar invokes the vastness of the night sky and all the stars that lie beyond. The experiential effect of that sound is given grounding, however, by David and Adam’s soft vocalizations, and then further brought down to Earth by “Brown Dog”’s giddy tone. Here, the brothers make a farce of our over-reliance on and fondness for our electronic devices, humbling the listener via a happy, bouncy tune.

A dual purpose like that — teasing the audience while reminding them of their humanity — requires finesse to pull off. But that’s the benefit of meaning what you sing, as The Brother Brothers do: one play-through gives the impression of parody, while another invites bobbing your head along.

Consider “Be My Bartender,” stowed away later in The January Album’s track list: The slow, deliberate tempo, coupled with the commanding pluck of an upright bass, makes for pleasing, animating music, but there’s substance to this song about raising a glass to shuttered watering holes. Pair that with “Super Moon,” the most overtly COVID-centered song in the bunch, and the brothers’ aesthetic leans further into double-headed contexts.

The January Album is all about the pandemic; it’s not about the pandemic at all. It’s about where we listen to it, and how.

Anglo-Finnish progressive metallers Wheel are pleased to announce the release of their much-anticipated third studio album ‘Charismatic Leaders’ on the 3rd May 2024. The album was meticulously crafted to meet Wheel’s ever-heightening benchmarks and recording with engineers/co-producers Daniel Bergstrand and Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah) stretched from August to December 2023. The end result, mixed by Forrester Savell, has consolidated all the gains of what came before: singer/guitarist James Lascelles, lead guitarist Jussi Turunen and drummer Santeri Saksala’s third album represents their heaviest and most conscious music to date.
